Organization Development / Multi-Culturalism / Strategic Planning

Context:   3-way JV of companies from US, Middle East, and China.
Needed to integrate: manufacturing technologies, project and business controls, engineering designs, systems, and management decision-making.   Each company brought something significant to the JV:  1) material as input into manufacturing, 2) state-of-the-art technology to manufacture product, and 3) market for sales.    Major clash of culture among personnel and high level of distrust existed throughout much of the project.

Great Wall of ChinaStrategies of Barnett Consulting:

  • Leveraged solidarity among engineers across the 3 cultures; subsequently attempted to achieve unity among business leaders.
  • Through one-on-one meetings, and in small groups of top leaders, fostered a willingness to come to the table to address diverse issues.
  • First, implemented team building workshops in homogeneous groups; then secondly, with blended groups.

Results:

  • Reduced number of meeting attendees by identifying those critical to a current issue or process.
  • Facilitated role clarification activity to reduce confusion and duplication of work.
  • Reduced amount of waste by providing strategic picture of project to team members.
  • Trust was reestablished.  As changes occurred, groups that were facilitated overcame the sense that commitment was not being observed.
